Pinellas County Safety and Emergency Services urges residents and visitors to practice fire safety at home and with pets this Independence Day holiday weekend. Every year, the misuse of fireworks results in hundreds of preventable calls to emergency responders and dozens of trips to the emergency room. Mote Marine Lab Tags First Turtles in 2022

We’ve satellite tagged our first two sea turtles of the season- Sweet Pea and Amelia! Mote satellite tagged the first nesting green sea turtle in Sarasota County, Sweet Pea, and Amelia, just a day apart from each other, both green sea turtles that Mote is familiar with. Sweet Pea was the first nesting green turtle that Mote satellite tagged back in 2007.

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) will receive $1 million from the Florida Commission for Transportation Disadvantaged for a re-launch of a regional transportation disadvantaged service in the Tampa Bay area that had been discontinued a year ago due to a lack of funding. Sea turtle nesting season takes place from May 1-Oct. 31 on Southwest Florida beaches. On nesting beaches, light from waterfront properties can disorient nesting female turtles and their young, which emerge at night and use dim natural light to find the sea. Also, beach furniture, trash and other obstacles can impede sea turtles and their young. Click here for the dos & don’ts of protecting sea turtles.

Pinellas County’s fertilizer ban runs from June 1st through September 30th. Increased rainfall during this period can cause nitrogen and phosphorus to reach bodies of water, causing a host of environmental issues such as water quality problems, fish kills, and other harmful effects.
