It seems especially timely to take a look back at one of St. Petersburg’s heroes, Dr. Robert Swain, whose efforts to push baseball into taking a step towards equality should not be forgotten. Baseball has been a part of St. Pete’s history for over a century dating back to when the St. Louis Brown’s played spring ball here in 1914. It’s a history with inspiring stories but also one of inequalities that arose from baseball being played during the Jim Crow era.
