VISIONARY DESIGNS

Britt Hayes, AIA joins John A. Bodziak, AIA

If you’re excited about the new Don the Beachcomber tiki bar opening in Madeira Beach, The Floridian Social Club, Cambria Hotel, Barefoot Beach Resort or The Karol Hotel, you can thank acclaimed architect Jack Bodziak. He is the visionary designing and building residential and commercial projects in Southwest Florida for many years with several new projects in the works on St. Pete Beach.

Always looking forward, the architectural firm is relocating to 5665 Central Ave. in West St. Pete and has partnered with a young visionary architect, Britt Hayes, AIA who moved from LA to St. Pete last year. A Berkeley undergraduate and Yale graduate (Master of Architecture), she worked for eight years with the legendary Frank Gehry on many high-profile projects including the mixed-use Grand Avenue development and Facebook’s Engineering Offices in Seattle.

Her vision was honed at a final graduate design studio led by Zaha Hadid, where she found encouragement to nurture her belief that “architecture is an art form that transcends the constraints of pragmatism and functionality.”  In the master apprentice tradition, Britt wanted to mentor and work with an experienced cutting-edge architect and was introduced to Bodziak, immediately discovering synergy. “Jack is a modernist and appreciative of my design and contemporary background and I like how he integrates art and culture into his designs (Floridian Social Club) and shares my passion for challenging ideas and going outside the box. He’s a generalist with experience in residential and commercial, and I’m learning so much from him.”

Licensed in both California and Florida, Britt’s working with Jack and “carrying the torch” on Emerald Sands, the resort replacing Miramar in SPB. “It’s a boutique 54-room hotel with restaurants and a rooftop pool bar and it’s going to change the attitude of how people look at hospitality here. It will have a luxury, fifties modernist look with luxury amenities, and the interiors have a nautical feel.”

She’s also collaborating on Windward Pass Resort, north of Hotel Zamora once owned by Beth Morean and soon to be a 100-room resort hotel with waterfront amenities, public spaces (a continuous pedestrian walkway site) and incorporate amenities for patrons to enjoy (game room, mini-golf, restaurant, rooftop tiki bar), 30 boat docks, a beautiful pool and a beautiful facade with balconies that are interpretations of sails and beach waves,” says Britt. Britt and Jack share a vision that buildings should be technically perfect and where possible, sustainable, and always compelling to look at and experience. “We need to make an effort to think of a building as an artistic expression and that can inspire people and stand on its own as a piece of artwork that resonates, is lasting, timeless and beyond trends, not a slave to what’s cool.”
