Vacation in Paradise

Vacation in Paradise by Mara Kathleen Drew

Mara Drew, age 12, wrote this essay to convince her parents to take her back to Florida. Sounds like she has a future in tourism promotion.

Have you ever been to Florida?

Well, I have and it’s amazing.  We go there almost every year. It’s kind of like a tradition.  Sometimes we even go with our cousins, but the bad thing is our cousins’ spring break is different than ours.  When we have gone with them in the past we have had so much fun. Last time we went with our cousins was four or five years ago, so I would say we rarely go with them.

My grandma and grandpa live half of the year in Palos Heights and the other half in Florida. They live in Florida in the spring and my cousins are going to Florida this year. My mom and dad picked this year out of all the years not to go. I’m writing an essay to persuade my mom and dad to take us to Florida. I will explain in this essay what Florida has to offer, my memories of Florida and some fun facts about Florida. So, I politely ask you to turn your cell phones off, sit down, relax, and enjoy the show.

Florida is an amazing place.  Some people say it’s the best state in America.

According to the internet, Florida is the most popular place for tourist to visit in America. There are millions of beautiful beaches and places to go in Florida.  It has many of the world’s best known theme parks, such as, Sea World, Universal Studios, and everyone’s favorite, Disney World.

When we go to Florida we make so many memories.   We can make more memories this year with our Grandma, Grandpa, and this year our cousins!  Some unforgettable memories we have made over the years are when we went to St. John’s Pass and there was this place where we held alligators.  We also go to this other place called Caddy’s. We eat dinner, play on the beach, watch the sunset and sometimes there is even trivia and we all play together.  There are always fun bands there.

Once we were at my grandma and grandpa’s condo and I just got a new fishing pole.

Behind the condo there is a big dock my brother Luke and I were fishing.  We used squid for bait. I was on the right side of the dock and Luke was on the left.  Luke kept catching fish at his spot, while I was not even getting a tug on my side. So, I asked Luke to switch spots.  When we did, after only a minute I felt a tug on my fishing pole and I pulled a fish out of the water! After we caught a few more fishes my mom came.

She took a picture of the fish and me.

Luke was taking the fish off the line and the fish jumped, and it scared Luke. Luke threw the fish up in the air and the pole flew up so they both ended up landing in the water.  I have so many great memories of Florida.

Now I am going to tell you some important and fun facts about Florida.  The best cities in Florida are starting with the most popular in order are Orlando, Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Key West, Daytona, Fort Meyers, and Sanibel Island.  St. Petersburg is where my Grandparents live half of the year. This is usually where we go when we visit Florida. St. Petersburg ranks number four. We sometimes go to Tampa, which ranks number three. In April of 1513, Florida was founded by an explorer Ponce de Leon. He called the area ‘la Florida’ in honor of Spain’s Eastertime celebration Pascua Florida (feast of flowers).

A fun fact about Florida is it has several nicknames, such as Sunshine State because it has a lot of sunshine all year. Another nickname is Alligator State because there is a there is a large amount of alligators living there.  The Everglade State is another nickname because there are a lot of Everglades in Florida. The Orange State, because there are many orange groves there. The Flower State because people say there is a land of flowers, such as wild flowers. The Peninsula state, because

Florida is a Peninsula.  Lastly, the Gulf State because some of Florida is on the border of the Gulf of Mexico.

I know you have a lot of doubts about going to Florida, like it costs too much money, or we are already going somewhere on Spring break. I know you think we will miss school, but I have arguments for those reasons.  Here are some solutions to the arguments. If you think it cost too much money, I will do chores and help pay for the trip. For we are already going to Alabama on Spring break, it won’t cost that much more money to go to Florida for a few days and how can you really put a price on memories. We won’t miss that much school and we can get our work ahead of time. The experience and memories will be well worth it.

I hope after reading this essay you will consider taking us to Florida. In this essay I have described so many cool things, places, and memories about Florida.  We can create so many new memories and I hope you remember all the things Florida has to offer you. We will have so much fun with our family like we always do. I hope after reading this essay you have a different perspective.

I do not know what you think of Florida, but personally, I describe it as Paradise.
