The 4th of July is always a busy weekend in Madeira Beach. Warm, beach-friendly weather calls out to residents and visitors alike, with thousands expected to head for the soft sands of Madeira Beach. It’s a weekend of traditions, honoring our patriotism with backyard barbeques, boat rides, and personal fireworks shows.
One tradition city staff and an army of volunteers are trying to curb this weekend is littering on the beach and elsewhere in the city. Beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, July 4th volunteers from the Trash Pirates, residents, and city staff will be handing out trash bags at beach access points with two messages, “Welcome to Madeira Beach” and “Please Clean Up After Yourself”. Volunteers will receive a free parking pass good for July 4th and 5th.
On Sunday, July 5th, the Trash Pirates will host their monthly community cleanup at 7 a.m.They will be joined by city staff from the Public Works and Sanitation Departments with a focus on cleaning spent fireworks and other trash on the beach. Volunteers for either day can gather at the pavilions at John’s Pass Park or Archibald Beach Park. Volunteers will receive a free parking pass good for July 4th and 5th. All volunteers are encouraged to wear a mask and practice safe distancing during the events.
Last month Mayor John Hendricks and the Board of Commissioners unanimously approved moving forward with establishing a policy of increased enforcement, no warnings, and a first-time offense fine of $250 for littering. The policy will be supported by new signage at beach access points, increasing the number of trash receptacles, and an increased collection schedule for sanitation crews.
