Red Tide Detected in Pinellas County

A patchy bloom of the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, persists in Southwest Florida. Over the past week (June 2-9, 2021), K. brevis was detected in 81 samples, with bloom concentrations (>100,000 cells/liter) observed in five samples from Pinellas County, three samples from Hillsborough County, three samples from Manatee County, one sample from Lee County, and three samples from Collier County. Tourism Soars Over Memorial Weekend

St. Pete/Clearwater continued its record-setting visitation trends over the Memorial Day Weekend. From the latest STR (Smith Travel Research) report, St. Pete/Clearwater saw a major uptick in Average Daily Rate (ADR) for hotel rooms – 28.6% higher than 2019, running at $242.26/night on Saturday, May 29. In addition, the destination saw one of the highest occupancy rates on record for Saturday at 95.9%, on par with Memorial Day Weekend 2019. This comes off the heels of the destination reporting its best Bed Tax Collections on record in March 2021 at $9.6 million.  April 2021 Bed Tax Collections (TDT) marked another record-breaking month, coming in at $8.7 million – $2 million more than 2019, a near 30% YOY increase. Information courtesy of Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.
