As if a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy and a two-headed calf aren’t creepy enough, a haunting collection of creepy dolls and other frightening objects has transformed the St. Petersburg Museum of History’s Odditorium Gallery into the Creepatorium.
For the month of October, the museum’s collection of oddities will share the space with some scary visitors.
Our creepy collection of dolls date from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s and were made with a variety of materials, ranging from porcelain to papier-mâché, from synthetic compounds to human hair.
Some depict real-world characters, such as a German-made Charlie Chaplin doll from 1915, complete with the silent film star’s iconic hat and cane. Some are eerily unique, handmade pieces of unknown origin, such as a marionette of a jester who is sporting a toothy grin and a large upturned nose.
Others are frightening by their features alone: sleeping eyes, ventriloquist mouths, and outfits which call back to the Victorian and Regency eras in which they were made.
The Creepatorium also features a religious flail, blood elixir, human skull, two-headed chicken and a Victorian mourning gown that invokes Museum visitors from long ago.
The Museum of History will remain open until 7pm every Friday in October to celebrate the Creepatorium’s favorite holiday — Halloween!
