HOUSE & GARDEN

SPRING CLEANING We’ve all become clean freaks and now know that soap with hot water is not as good as using an alcohol-based cleaner (70 percent of higher) or a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) or disinfecting wipes made with bleach at least twice a week if not daily. But do you know some of the germiest spots in your home could be your spice jars, faucets, light switches, remotes, phones, computer keyboards, microwave pads and game consoles? Another culprit in your kitchen is your cutting board, countertops and the humble sponge which should be tossed every couple of weeks, cleaned with diluted bleach solution or placed in a bowl of water with soap in the microwave. Give your laundry room a once over. Bacteria can grow in your washing machine drain, and bacteria from dirty laundry, such as underwear and towels, can collect in the washer drum. Run an empty cycle of hot water and a half cup of bleach once or twice a month depending on usage.

DIY ART Love looking at art in galleries but on a budget? Why not consider purchasing a local artist at the markets or 2nd Saturday ArtWalk in downtown St. Pete or Vintage Marche? We’ve discovered new favorites in the Warehouse District (Wendy Costa) and even explored making our own masterpieces at Painting with Picasso. Here’s a DIY project you can do on a Saturday afternoon using a simple swirling technique to paint an abstract watercolor masterpiece. Blend color around a canvas using a foam brush, your finger, or even an empty condiment bottle to create a unique design. Then craft an inexpensive frame from painted wood lattice strips. Another inexpensive DIY project is to take that beautiful sunset or Florida birds in flight photo and blow it up on canvas or matte in a frame.

OUTDOOR LIVING Give your porch or patio a makeover for spring. Optimize a small space by avoiding chunky furniture, opting for tall, slender rocking chairs or a narrow bistro set. For a larger porch, create multiple zones in a consistent style and color.  Create a reading nook with a cushioned bench and side table for lemonade and a potted plant. For easy outdoor entertaining, set up a small vintage table, a colorful placemat, vase with fresh flowers and chairs. Add seasonal throw blankets and pillows, an outdoor rug, wall décor or a mirror.
