The St. Petersburg area has more good boating water – and good boating weather — than anywhere else in the U.S. There is water just right for every boating taste including power cruising, sailing, offshore fishing, inshore fishing, scuba diving, water skiing, wakeboarding and personal water crafting.
To the west is the Gulf of Mexico. To the south is Boca Ciega Bay. To the east is Tampa Bay, including protected bays, marinas and natural anchorages like Riviera Bay, Coffee Pot Bayou and Big Bayou. Add in 40 or so miles of the Intracoastal Waterway running north and south between the mainland and Gulf barrier islands, with many convenient “passes” to and from the open water. Plus, there are about 200 miles of deep-water residential canals for sightseeing and fishing. Also, factor in famous 2,500-acre Lake Tarpon. Bass anglers know it as the lake that at one time held the state black bass record of more than 19 pounds.
The St. Petersburg-Clearwater area also boasts hundreds of miles of clear, shallow kayaking water, including marked kayak/canoe trails through the celebrated mangrove forest “tunnels” at Caladesi Island State Park near Dunedin and Weedon Island Preserve near St. Petersburg. The St. Petersburg area has earned its reputation as America’s boating and sailing capital. Boaters agree. Pinellas County has more registered boats than any other Florida county.
