Bringing more than a dozen new murals and vibrant special events to our City of the Arts, the SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival returns for its second yearSeptember 1 – 10, 2016, showcasing colorful and inspiring public murals by a diverse group of artists from around the world.
The festival, which received widespread media accolades in its first year, is a non-profit public art project built in partnership between local artists and community members. SHINE illuminates the power of art in public spaces by revitalizing areas, inspiring dialogue, and uniting the St. Petersburg community.
New for 2016, artists and art teams local to St. Petersburg are invited to participate in the SHINE Open Call, an opportunity to showcase mural work on a grand scale with beautiful downtown St. Petersburg as a backdrop. Qualified applicants must be 18 years of age or older, and live or work in the greater St. Petersburg region.
The finalist will be selected based on criteria such as visual impact of design, and experience creating similar large-scale works. Submission deadline isJuly 11, 2016, and the chosen artist or team will be notified in August, receiving a $1,000 stipend plus approved supply and equipment expenses related to the project. Another exciting new twist this year brings art off the walls and onto the streets, literally, with the Painted Intersection Project. Led by acclaimed local artist Cecelia Lueza, with help from community volunteers, the project will transform the intersection at Central Ave and 5th Street in downtown St. Petersburg into a dynamic artwork created using traffic paint. Lueza was commissioned to paint intersections in Ft. Lauderdale as part of a similar project, and that city reports traffic calming and safer pedestrian environments as a result.
SHINE continues to innovate and inspire in 2016, all while cultivating new standards of artistic excellence and reflecting the region’s intensely creative spirit. To learn more about this year’s festival, please visit http://shineonstpete.com.
