Coastal residents are invited to learn about the upcoming Sand Key and Treasure Island beach nourishment project a public meeting later this month. Pinellas County will host the meeting on Wednesday, March 28, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Indian Shores Municipal Facility, located at 19305 Gulf Blvd. in Indian Shores. The meeting will provide an overview of the project and project timetable.
Representatives from Pinellas County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will answer questions about the project, which is scheduled to begin in mid-April. Sand placement will begin on Treasure Island beaches. The project will then move north to Sand Key at North Redington Beach and continue northward along the beaches to Clearwater.
Beach nourishment benefits the community by providing increased storm protection for property owners and recreational opportunities for beach visitors. It also creates important habitat for shorebirds and nesting sea turtles. The project aligns with Pinellas County’s strategic goal of practicing superior environmental stewardship by preserving and managing environmental lands, beach parks and historical assets.
