Important Safety Notice from the Gulfport Fire Department: Returning Home After Hurricane Milton

Letter from City of Gulfport, Florida

The Gulfport Fire Department urges residents returning home after Hurricane Milton to exercise extreme caution. Many buildings in our community are still without power and operational elevators, creating unsafe living conditions.

As residents begin to return from shelters, we want to emphasize that our personnel are unable to restore power or activate elevators in affected buildings. Our equipment is designed solely to assist individuals in descending stairs; we currently have no means to transport anyone back up.

We strongly advise against occupying any building lacking power or functional elevators, as this poses significant risks to safety. Please prioritize your well-being and consider delaying your return until utilities are fully restored.

If you are experiencing any issues with turning on the elevator, please reach out directly to your elevator service provider for assistance.

For updates on power restoration, visit Duke Energy’s website at https://www.duke-energy.com/outages or to report your outage text OUT to 57801 or call 800-228-8485.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this challenging time. Stay safe.
