Travels through Property Law by Tom Brodersen, Esq.
Great! We can help with that… maybe…
I do a lot of real estate law, wills & trusts, estate planning, and probate, along with other areas that are, in some fashion, related to real estate. That is why our URL is PropertyLawGroup.com. My wife, Pat Anderson, whom I have for years called our “genuine, fire-breathing trial lawyer,” did civil litigation of many varieties, but Pat isn’t taking a lot of new cases these days.
So, what do we do when a client needs a divorce lawyer, bankruptcy practitioner, criminal lawyer, or other service in a legal field we don’t personally do? Well, when you spend a lot of time in court, you see a lot of lawyers, talk to them in the halls, comparing notes on trends in the law and judges you both appear in front of. You see those lawyers when they’re up on their feet fighting for their clients. And you see for yourself who is truly talented at this law thing, and who is bumping into walls. At least, before the pandemic that was true.
When asked for a recommendation to a lawyer or other service provider, we take that very seriously. If we refer you to a lawyer and that lawyer lets you down, we’ve let you down, and our reputation is diminished as a result. So, if we are asked to make a recommendation where we don’t really know any outstanding lawyers, we will tell you exactly what we do or don’t know about the field, perhaps providing three names of people who have been in the field a while, but letting you know we don’t really know their qualifications like we wish. You, of course, are always free to seek other opinions, and do your own “due diligence” on the internet before contacting someone and making a decision. Please, though, don’t rely on advertising, whether on TV, radio, buses or benches. Word of mouth from other clients of a lawyer is always a good thing.
There are also other advisers and counselors, such as the building trades, where we have a friend we have worked with for many years who is a general contractor, and has encyclopedic knowledge about building codes, zoning, and construction standards, in all of the communities of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. People like that are a pleasure to recommend, because I know the client will be glad to work with someone of that caliber and will end up thanking me.
The people who you will find helpful in your moment of need are people who know what they’re talking about and will take the time to give you great service. In the end, it all comes down to thoughtfulness.
