Upham Beach nourishment project to begin this month. Sand replacement on north end of St. Pete Beach will take about two weeks. Norfolk Dredging, which constructed the Sand Key and Treasure Island projects last year, will nourish Upham Beach at the north end of St. Pete Beach. Equipment mobilization will start soon, and nourishment is set to begin the last week of May. Sand placement will be from north to south, with about 700 feet fenced off around the active work area. Pet Friendly Shelters

Pinellas County pet owners have new options when it comes to pet-friendly emergency shelters. The Pinellas County School Board and Pinellas County government provide these three pet-friendly shelter locations.

  • Palm Harbor High School, 1900 Omaha St., Palm Harbor
  • Largo High School, 410 Missouri Ave. N., Largo
  • Gibbs High School, 850 34th St. S., St. Petersburg

The facilities are substantially built, have large indoor gyms, and separate air handlers to ensure the comfort and safety of allergic citizens who shelter there. Summer  Volunteer Opportunity for High School Students

Friday from 9am – noon – Tampa Bay Watch has an opportunity for high school students (minimum age of 15 years old) to volunteer with us over the summer. The program will take place on Fridays from June 14 through August 9 (There will not be a session on July 5) at our facility in Tierra Verde. Usually there is a group of ten students and one of our staff who leads an environmental project such as cleaning fishing line, cleaning a shoreline, or planting marsh grasses. St. Pete Catalyst presented the first Tech Catalyst award to St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman. Joe Hamilton, Catalyst publisher, presented the award to Kriseman during powered UP, Tampa Bay Tech’s technology festival, an afternoon of keynotes & panel discussions taking a deep dive into technology. The award is designed to recognize an individual who makes a difference in the community, challenges norms and illustrates innovative thinking, said Jill St. Thomas, executive director of Tampa Bay Tech. Kriseman called on the sold-out crowd at the Duke Energy For The Arts Mahaffey Theater to continue to foster innovation in the area.  “I want to encourage all of you to seek out opportunities to mentor a young student who wants to be successful in the technology industry. Your investment in their growth & development could mean the difference between a young person seeking out a career in technology or finding themselves on a different path,” Kriseman said.  “If we work at it we can keep the innovative spirit that drives the Tampa Bay technology boom going by inspiring the next generation.”

City of Gulfport and Legion Post 125 celebrate FLAG DAY June 14th – 10 am in Veteran’s Park, 5130 31st Ave. South in Gulfport. Special guests include Soprano Catherine Bassett & the New Horizon’s Band of Gulfport.


The City of Madeira Beach has begun its search for a permanent replacement for outgoing City Manager Jonathan Evans. The search will be conducted nation-wide utilizing several platforms including the city’s website, the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), the Florida City and County Management Association (FCCMA), Florida League of Cities, social media, statewide, regional and local publications. Mr. Evans tendered his resignation on Thursday, May 9, 2019. The terms of his employment contract call for him to remain on the job for no longer than 60 days following his resignation. Upon submitting his resignation Mr. Evans also laid out the following schedule for hiring a new City Manager:

  • May 17, 2019 – Post position and job advertisement. Tuesday,
  • June 11, 2019 – Commissioners will review applications and résumés and may short list their top 5 candidates.
  • Tuesday, June 25, 2019, – Commissioners will host public interviews of the top five candidates.
  • Wednesday, June 26, 2019 – The Board of Commissioners will convene to rank the candidates.

After this is concluded and a candidate is selected, contract negotiations will commence. July 9, 2019 – The Board of Commissioners will approve an employment contract with the new city manager.  

Mr. Evans last day is July 9.


ANTE UP for a Great Time

Glitz, glamour, and casino-style gaming is on Saturday, August 10, starting with a social hour at 6 pm, gaming at 7 pm – The Club at Treasure Island, 400 Treasure Island Causeway.  Admission $60/person buys $5,000 in fun money for those who purchase their tickets by July 31. After August 1, a $60 ticket includes just $2,500.

Casino style games include Black Jack, Texas Hold ’Em, Roulette, Craps, and Slot Machines. Entertainment is provided throughout, and attendees can have their photographs taken with Las Vegas Showgirls. At the end of the evening, dealers will cash out chips for raffle tickets that can be used to bid on a variety of prizes. Participants are encouraged to dress in the glitz of a Las Vegas theme, or  “come as you are.” A silent auction is also scheduled.

Gulfport History Museum reopened After months of renovation following last year’s Labor Day fire, the museum is in beautiful shape and officially open to the public. Gulfport Historical Society (GHS)’s plans for the coming year include ongoing efforts to digitize and preserve Gulfport’s town records, The exhibit, The Gabber: 50 Years of Hyper-local News will be on display. The Museum is open Mon. – Friday 2-4 pm, Saturday 10 am – Noon. Dogs and well-behaved children are always welcome. Admission is free but donations are lovingly appreciated. PN
