WOMEN’S WORK

Through Sept. 11, Women’s Work: A Survey of Female Photographers is at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete. More than any other visual medium, women have played vital and sustained roles in the making and advancement of photography. Unfortunately, this contribution has been underemphasized. The MFA photography collection is rich in examples of innovative, courageous, and talented women photographers from the earliest days of the medium to contemporary times.

Ahh, SPAA

The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance is now offering a discounted membership rate of $125 to St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce members. A SPAA membership shows you support the arts in our community and continue to grow and enhance its impact. The arts in St. Pete is an important driver of economic development, which helps our city generates over $760,000 in tourism dollars. Demonstrate your support of economic growth in St. Pete through the arts by contacting Tracy Kennard at tracy@stpeteartsalliance.org.

SPAA also named Tiffany Ford as the director of community advancement. Ford’s role will be to develop and expand collaborative programs and partnerships that embrace and advance arts in St. Pete. Ford’s first initiatives will be to enhance SPAA’s educational programming including guidance and support of Arts for a Complete Education (ACE), professional development opportunities for practicing and emerging artists, and collaborations with key partners to bring accessible summer programs to teens interested in the arts. FYI, Tiffany most recently co-founded Sunshine City Improv Theatre (SCIT), and the networking and advocacy group Women of Tampa Bay Performing Arts.

Weirder than an NFT?

An invisible artwork by Yves Klein just sold for more than $1 million at Sotheby’s in Paris. Well, sort of. On the auction block was a paper receipt for a “Zone de sensibilité picturale immatérielle,” or a “zone of empty space,” a 1959 conceptual creation by the French artist. After fees, the price for the object exceeded €1,060,000 ($1.2 million). According to Sotheby’s, the buyer was a “private European collector.”Yves Klein, Zone de sensibilité picturale immatérielle (1959). Image courtesy of Sotheby’s
