Madeira Beach Collecting School Supplies and More for Fundamental K-8

During this holiday season, as we focus on family and friends, it’s easy to forget that there are children in our community that go without. For some, its simple school supply needs like notepads, pens, and pencils. For others, the need can be more personal, like clothing and shoes.

Now through Dec. 21st, the City of Madeira Beach is accepting donations of school supplies and new footwear (sneakers, shoes, etc.) for kids at Madeira Beach Fundamental School. A collection box can be found in the lobby of City Hall, 300 Municipal Drive, Madeira Beach.

“We are fortunate to live in a beach community with palm trees, Gulf breezes, and balmy temperatures most of the year,” said Madeira Beach City Manager Jonathan Evans. “Even in this paradise we have households that struggle to provide their kids with basics like good shoes or school supplies – I believe we can help change that.”

Throughout 2018, Evans and his Executive Assistant, Lacy Lafave, have been mentoring students at Madeira Beach Fundamental. While giving back to the community, they learned about some of the challenges the children face in school and life. “These kids want to learn. They love going to school and deserve every opportunity to succeed,” said Ms. Lafave. “In this season of giving we are asking Madeira Beach residents and businesses to open their hearts and wallets to help the next generation.”

Madeira Beach Fundamental is home to 1,439 students. The school holds a Niche Ranking of A-, the 3rd highest such ranking in Pinellas County. Fundamental Schools provide a highly structured learning environment emphasizing parent involvement and where students are expected to exhibit exemplary achievement and conduct. The dress code exceeds that of the school district, homework is required most days, and there is a focus on student responsibility and self-discipline. Parents are required to attend monthly meetings. Rules and policies are strictly enforced, and a strong emphasis is placed on the requirement that home and school work together to promote successful learning.
