My love of coffee knows no bounds. When GulfPerk opened in Gulfport last fall I may have uttered a “hurrah” of joy. Finally, competition in our tiny java world.
The new addition provides genuine choices. SumitrA is coffee shop yin – dark, mysterious, quiet, a place that feels smoky even though – thank goodness – there’s no smoking in restaurants, even in Florida. GulfPerk is yang. Housed in an actual house – a sign near the kitchen says, “The Cottage, built in 1939” – GulfPerk is light and airy and infinitely welcoming.
I love to lurk in the shadows of SumitrA with a book as I eavesdrop on an intimate conversation or tarot reading. But when I’m in a social mood I prefer to linger at GulfPerk. It’s bustling and noisy, the kind of place where you’re likely to meet a neighbor or strike up a conversation with an out-of-towner. It’s even a great place to work; the wordy cacophony forms white noise rather reveal distinct voices.
It goes without saying the beverages are outstanding. My go-to is the cortado, halfway between pure espresso and cappuccino – short, dark, and strong (qualities I also admire in a man). If you need a nosh the menu is extensive, ranging from bagels and pastries to hearty sandwiches.
