Far Infrared Saunas have been around for years, but only recently have become popular in North America.
In a far infrared sauna, a moderately fit person can sweat one pound of sweat in a 30-minute session, which is the equivalent of running 2-3 miles. Unlike conventional saunas, which pull sweat out of the body, far Infrared energy penetrates up to 3 inches into the body and pushes sweat out. The temperature of afar-infrared sauna is typically between 90۫ – 120۫ F versus a traditional sauna that operates between 180۫-220۫ F.
However, despite operating at a lower temperature, you will typically perspire far more in infrared saunas because the infrared energy penetrates your body at a much deeper level.
Fat becomes water soluble at 100۫ F, when it begins to dissolve, move through the blood and finally is removed from the body, resulting in weight loss. Toxins are also eliminated through your skin using lower, comfortable temperatures, for rapid detoxification. Benefits attributed to far-infrared saunas include:
- Relieves Stress – leaves you feeling rejuvenated
- Detoxify Effect – improve health by ridding your body of toxins
- Cardiovascular conditioning – can decrease heart failure & hypertension
- Alleviates Muscle & Joint Pain great for arthritis & rheumatism sufferers.
- Weight Loss along with reduced cellulite , especially beneficial for diabetics
- Improved Immune Function – increase resistance to disease
- Improved Skin Tone & Elasticity
- Helps Skin Problems; helps heal scars, burns, acne, eczema, psoriasis
- Preserves memory function
Amy Chillag reported Feb 21, for CNN in the column ‘Staying Well’ that a 2016 study linked frequent sauna use with decreasing risk of Alzheimers and dementia.
Dr. David T. Burke includes saunas in his treatments at Emory University Rehabilitative Hospital where he specializes in brain injuries. Dr. Burke was quoted as saying ‘It’s a quick way — 20 minutes, 4 times / week to preserve a brain that has not been hurt.”
Scott Schriver, a Massage Therapist (MA25421), personal trainer, and Zoe (Zo-ee) Schriver, also a Licensed Massage Therapist (MA31664) and Holistic Health Coach with over 40 years of combined experience, are convinced of the benefits. They have recently outfitted several rooms with saunas and showers, and are rebranding their wellness center on 57th St. at 1st Ave. N. (31 57th St. N. 33710) in St. Petersburg as Helios Health.
Sauna sessions are being reserved for $20, $30 with Migun Therapy Table, or $200/mth unlimited, independently and in conjunction with massage, therapy or training. “Wellness centers elsewhere in the nation have found regular use of far infrared therapy a beneficial program and we wanted to offer it in St. Petersburg,” said Scott. “It is particularly helpful for diabetics & weight loss candidates with injuries limiting running, trips to the gym or their favorite form of exercise” added Zoe.
Helios Health also offers medical, therapeutic, and many specialty massages, exercise rehabilitation, personal training, holistic health coaching, gait analysis, plus massage add-ons like cupping, reflexology and sugar scrubs.
St. Pete Beach resident Sandy Lyman has been strongly recommending Scott and Zoe. “These two are AMAZING,” she said. “I go to them when I am really hurting and they make the pain go away. They take great care of their clients.”
