CBD & WELLNESS: CBD vs. Delta 8 vs. Delta 9 THC

By Margo Gilliland

In Florida, understanding these three terms will help you navigate the cannabis landscape.  Hemp’s history goes back to thousands of years.  The Cannabis plant is one of the world’s oldest cultivated crops.  “Archeologists have found hemp fibers dating back 10,000 years” according to the book The Basics of Hemp and Marijuana. The oldest record of marijuana’s medicinal use dates back to 4000 B.C. when the plant was used for its anesthetic properties.  Cannabis had made its way to the Middle East and India by 1000 B.C. and was prized for its ability to relieve anxiety.

Why was it criminalized when it was a time tested, widely used plant?  The answer dates back to 1910 when the Mexican Revolution caused great unrest in the country.  One custom the Mexican immigrants enjoyed was the use of marijuana as a recreational drug.  Americans were use to the substance as medicine. Americans, unaware that this “marijuana” was the very same cannabis that sat in their medicine cabinets, were convinced that the immigrants had introduced a dangerous new drug to the country.  Perhaps the worst consequence is that this has prevented many from seeing the drug as a viable medicinal remedy.

CBD is derived from the hemp plant.  It does not cause a euphoric feeling.  The World Health Organization reports it exhibits no effects of any abuse or dependence potential. Studies and research in humans suggest CBD may help with anxiety, insomnia, pain, and seizures. I take 25mg CBD watermelon gummies daily.

Delta 8 is made from hemp.  The 2018 farm bill states cannabis with less than 0.3% THC is considered hemp.  Anything that naturally derives from hemp is federally legal. Delta 8 is psychoactive. Because it is unregulated, it is important to purchase high quality, lab tested Delta 8.  It is sometimes paired with CBD to boost its effects.  The Goods has quality gummies, vapes, blunts, topicals and tinctures.

Delta 9 THC requires a Florida medical marijuana card to purchase at a dispensary. It comes from the marijuana plant with over .3% THC.  THC has psychoactive effects which cause euphoria and traditional known effects including medicinal effects.   Delta 9 can be extracted from the hemp plant as well and is called Delta 9 hemp derived THC.  At The Goods we offer high quality hemp extracted cannabidiols across the spectrum.
