ART IN THE GARDEN Visit self-taught artist Catherine Weaver at 2nd Saturday Art Walk and enjoy a creative experience in her Uniquely Original Art Studio outdoor bamboo garden (915 24th St. S, DTSP) where you can visit with the artist or create your very own masterpiece 10/11 or 12/9 5-9pm. The building has been in her family since 1947 when it was built by her grandfather, and she is in the process of remodeling the studio. She will be launching a wearable art line as well that will feature t-shirts, shoes, tote bags, jackets, jeans and hats. Weaver was one of a group of artists chosen to paint the Black Lives Matter mural in front of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum. In an interview in Weekly Challenger, Weaver describes her cultural art painting parties. “Uniquely Original Art Studio is a place where your creative expression can be put on canvas, expressed through spoken words, or felt by the rhythm of the African drum during one of our drum circles,” she shared. “We are a cultural art studio in the heart of the African American community.” Follow her on https://bit.ly/3Qhx3yV.
MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS On 11/9 @6pm the MFA hosts an Artist Talk with Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.). Globally renowned and celebrated for his exquisitely crafted lush and brilliant works, Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.) brings an extraordinary life story to a rich and compelling body of work in a variety of media. Born Deyvi Orangel Peña Arteaga, using his moniker Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.), creates paintings/collages on mica, videos, installations, and performances, through which he breaks down belief systems into intersecting components of science, spirituality, and mysticism. In 1987, artist Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A) fled Venezuela to escape persecution. Twenty-five years later, Alvarez was charged with identity theft and falsifying a passport and was detained at Krome Detention Center in Miami for two months in 2012. During this time, he created a series of portraits of his fellow detainees using ballpoint pens and whatever paper he could find. From its remarkably arduous and modest beginnings, his art has matured into a thriving creative practice, gaining acknowledgment from significant institutions worldwide.
