Arts & Culture Tidbits for Pinellas County February 2018

MUSE will celebrate artistic inspiration on Friday, February 9, 2018, at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, at 7:00 pm.  The fifth annual benefit for the arts will recognize the breadth & beauty of art and culture in our City of the Arts, and pay tribute to those that continue to inspire and guide St. Petersburg to its standing as an international arts destination.  Proceeds will benefit artists, arts education, and arts & cultural organizations through our Arts Alliance programs and services.
IMAGINE MUSEUM, The newest museum to join St. Petersburg’s passionate art community, Imagine Museum, had it’s grand opening on Tuesday, January 23rd.
Imagine Museum is showcasing the American Studio Glass Movement that began in the 1960s through present day – the first of its kind in the Southeast United States. Imagine Museum visually moves the visitor through the history of the remarkable medium of studio glass art, starting with the early pioneers of Harvey Littleton and Dominic Labino, through the groundbreaking heyday of Dale Chihuly, and up through today’s artists creating this transcendent art.
What makes this medium so unique is that 94 percent of its artists are living and many of them are still creating. Imagine intends to bring many of these artists to St. Petersburg to share their exhilarating stories of how their art is created. Imagine Museum’s permanent collection includes artists and artwork that best represent the history and bravado that set Americans apart from their predecessors. “This movement was quite rebellious against the tradition of crafting beautiful, but rather utilitarian, glass pieces. In true American spirit, the creators of the Studio Glass Art Movement morphed glass into a true art form,” said Joanna Sikes, executive director.  “It was the 60s – this was Rock and Roll, not reverent.”
Imagine Museum will be hosting the prestigious International Glass Art Society Conference – bringing significant collectors and glass enthusiasts from around the world to the Tampa Bay region in March 2019.
Located at 1901 Central Avenue, in the Central Arts District of St. Petersburg.
Ticket: $10/children, $15/adults.  Museum members always receive free admission.
Tues/ Wed/ Fri & Sat, 10 to 5,  Thursday until 8 pm & Sundaynoon to 5:30 pm.
The IM Store features a worldwide collection of stunning handmade jewelry, glass gifts and books.

St. Petersburg Accessible Murals Tour
The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance believes our city’s murals should be accessible to all.
They chose 40 centrally located works to focus on, spotlighting the Shine St. Petersburg Mural Festival, several special murals, plus two murals commissioned by AARP Tampa Bay.
Following a recent tour of this year’s Shine murals, Rep. Charlie Crist states,
“The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance is putting our community on the map through Shine, highlighting our city as a world-class arts destination and hub of creativity. With this partnership with AARP, an amazing display of local and international talent will be accessible for all to enjoy via a self-guided virtual tour for those miles away or with mobility restrictions.  I am proud that my hometown of St. Petersburg continues to promote innovation & inclusion.”
The Accessible Mural Tour program is produced by SPAA with initial funding from AARP Tampa Bay. “As a national champion for livable communities, AARP is proud to support the St. Petersburg Accessible Mural Tour which allows anyone, regardless of age, ability or locale, to experience our city’s vibrant arts community.,”  states Michelle Cyr, AARP Florida Associate State Director for Outreach.
The audio portion of the tour provides vivid descriptions of each mural, the artist and its setting.  The online guide includes transcriptions of the audio recordings, photos and a map, with notes on accessible parking and mobility barriers.
Jennifer Sabo, Executive Director, VSA Florida writes, “This project is likely to serve as a model for other mural programs around the country.  To our knowledge, no other organization in the United States offers mural tours designed for the needs of those with visual, hearing or physical disabilities.  VSA Florida has been honored to assist the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance as they develop this much-needed resource and fully supports the Arts Alliance’s leadership in providing access to public art in St. Petersburg with this innovative and creative program.”
These written and recorded tours are now available to everyone – on a home computer, smart phone or any other mobile device.  The brochure may also be downloaded at the
