Discover how beautiful works of glass are created in real time with professional glass blowers educating you on the process. From gathering the molten glass from the furnace, to working it on the pontil pipe and glory hole, to its final cool down process in the annealing kiln, visitors gain a new appreciation for this art form. View the gaffer blowing glass while the assistant narrates in detail the science behind the glass, the artistic vision guiding the process and the steps involved as the work is being produced. Thru Oct. 8: The World’s Greatest Kiting – The Studio@620 & Drayton Callison are collaborating to bring a new exciting immersive exhibition featuring innovative, unique and handmade kites from around the world, ranging from popular sport models, to one-of-a-kind works of art, giant structures to delicate forms that fit in your hand, historic artifacts to contemporary designs, wind propelled to windless kites. There will be an additional mini exhibition featuring conceptual kites created by local artists as well as educational programming, presentations, demonstrations, workshops, and will organize some hands on outdoor kite flying events.

• Oct. 21-Nov. 1   Midtown-Throught Their Eyes – Come experience Midtown and Beyond as shown through the eyes of Journeys In Journalism participants. This program is designed to immerse students K-12 in journalism/multimedia training which results 100 photographic images and multimedia displays. There will also  be a series of related events that highlight the experience of the Midtown  community.

You can enjoy demonstrations of how they create their work and buy directly from the artist. • Oct. 14, 16, 18:  Il Trovatore

St. Petersburg Opera’s second decade begins with Il Trovatore, Giuseppe Verdi’s turbulent tragedy of four characters caught in a web of family ties, politics and love, seasoned with revenge and death.  The characters are impelled by raw emotion and the music is as uninhibited as the emotions. The story of the troubadour of the title, his vengeance–obsessed gypsy mother, his devoted lover and her evil aristocratic pursuer is pure soap opera.

The Morean Center for Clay 420 22nd Street South, downtown St. Pete

One of the largest working potteries in the Southeast United States.  It offers education, studio space, rotating exhibitions and gallery sales in one large, beautifully-renovated train station. It’s here you will find The Morean Center for Clay’s Artist in Residence (AIR) program, which houses six artists on an annual

work exchange basis. Each resident agrees to work a total of 15 hours a week in exchange for their studio, 24 hour studio access, firings and discounts on clay. The current AIRs include Jackie Head, Seth Charles, Kelsey Nagy, Tucker Claxton, Patrick Rademaker and Liana Agnew.

ARTS NEWS

The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art – This new 80,000 SF museum is coming to the 100 block of Central Ave. and 1st  Ave. So. The museum will be the permanent home of 400-500 premier works of art selected from more than 3,000 pieces collected by Tom and Mary James over the years. In addition to over 30,000 SF of gallery space, the museum will include a 2,500 SF  indoor sculpture court with an indoor waterfall, a 120-seat theater, a 6,000 SF event space, premium catering kitchen, museum store and cafe. Tom and Mary James, longstanding philanthropists of the community, are investing over $50 million personally into the project, which will undoubtedly become an iconic arts destination for the city as well as the region.
